Gensler to Design Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Extension

Expansion will accommodate 4 million more passengers annually

AUSTIN, Texas — Gensler was selected by the City of Austin to be the designer and architect for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport east terminal gate expansion.

The terminal will grow by approximately 70,000 square feet, a 23 percent increase in space. The expansion includes lobby renovations, infrastructure and security improvements, new business space, concessions, restroom facilities, concourse circulation and public art consultation.

“We are happy to have this opportunity to enhance the Austin Airport,” said Gensler Austin Managing Director Todd Runkle. “Our firm is doing exciting work in airports across the globe, and we hope to bring those cutting-edge ideas to our work here in Austin.”

The expansion includes a concourse footprint that will accommodate seven to eight additional aircraft parking spaces on the apron for both domestic and international airline operations. This near-term expansion will provide an approximate 30 percent increase in aircraft operational capacity.

The expanded terminal will accommodate about 4 million additional passengers per year for a total of 15 million annual passengers — an increase of 27 percent.

“Our airport work really focuses on the passenger experience,” explained Gensler Design Director David Epstein. “We bring our expertise in transportation, retail, hospitality, workplace, brand design and health & wellness to create airport experiences that anticipate passenger needs.”

Gensler has been involved with the ABIA for many years. In 1999, the original ABIA Barbara Jordan Terminal was completed. Gensler was the associate architect on that project and worked closely with Page, the architect of record.
