U.S. Department of Defense Health Headquarters

Falls Church, Virginia

In relocating more than 3,200 Department of Defense (DoD) personnel to this existing facility, three interconnected buildings built between the 1950s and 1980s were stripped to their original studs and joists and completely redesigned. Building systems underwent upgrades, and the lobby was redesigned for enhanced security and flexibility. Using energy-efficient design principles, interior spaces now incorporate open-plan layouts and state-of-the-art communications. The DoD visual identity standards that Gensler developed serve to distinguish each of the groups working in the headquarters, while promoting a coherent and navigable environment. These communications standards were then compiled in a guidelines handbook that the Department can use in future facilities. Base building renovations were fast-tracked, and completed on time and under budget.
