For its new six-story headquarters, Australian-based BHP Billiton wanted a workplace that would inspire and nurture its people. Gensler’s charge was to design an innovative workspace to accommodate the dramatic growth of staff and assist in recruiting and retaining talented people. Three dynamic, multi-story trading floors are physically and visually connected to support operations areas and conference spaces. The Health-Discovery cafeteria shares the floor with an auditorium, where LED lights in the walls simulate corral reefs. Underscoring their vision of sustainability, the new facility also houses a full wellness center and was among the first buildings in Houston to achieve LEED® Platinum certification.
