Newark Community Museum
of Social Justice
Newark, New Jersey
The Newark Community Museum is a symbol of the community’s historied movement for justice and aspirations for the future. Gensler worked closely with the City of Newark to convert the 1st Police Precinct, the flashpoint of the 1967 Newark Rebellion, into a community museum for learning, healing, and storytelling. The concept design reflects Gensler’s community engagement with the City, students at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and residents’ desire for an intergenerational space to memorialize those who experienced the Rebellion. The Museum utilizes the existing structure to establish galleries, a community room and Conflict Resolution Center. A plaza outside features outdoor seating for public events and a garden with a grove of 26 trees serves as a dedication to those lives lost in pursuit of equality and justice.
