Gensler provided interior design, sustainability consulting, strategic planning and design guidelines for this modernization of GSA’s national headquarters. This included the complete renovation and selective historic restoration of a 700,000-square-foot historic building and the addition of a 105,000-square-foot courtyard infill. To meet the GSA’s aim of accommodating nearly twice the building’s previous capacity, the design team curated a “living lab” mobility pilot, encouraging the 4,500 federal employees to work more collaboratively, adapt to virtual work and work fluidly throughout the building. In addition to increased efficiencies, the GSA reduced its real estate footprint by 50 percent, saving $24 million in leasing costs annually.
