ABOUT

CONTEXT, a curated lecture series by Gensler + Frances Anderton from KCRW, seeks to uncover the role that context plays in the conception of creative work. The inaugural series interprets “context” in its most literal form, exploring the city of Los Angeles as a driver of creative thought.

In 1926, the YWCA opened the largest commercial building funded by women, for women, Hotel Figueroa. It served as a safe haven for solo female travelers, who were prohibited from checking into most hotels without a male chaperone.

With the ever-changing landscape of women empowerment, can we begin to unpack this idea of “space” as a form of activism? We take a look at the physical and psychological spaces, in history and modernity, that have been created for women under the context of LA.

In the spirit of California Air Day, we build on the idea that shared experiences unite people to improve our community health. To understand how Los Angeles battles climate change, we explore the larger context of global warming and the direct impact it has on air quality. Our panel will discuss what is being done in LA to battle climate change via air quality enhancements at the local level, which will in turn have potential global implications.

The second installment of the CONTEXT lecture series continues with a focus on one of L.A.’s most defining features: its freeways.

The freeway system is undoubtably an integral part of the city’s identity. As a result, it inevitably drives a vast amount of creative work.

Moderated by KCRW’s Frances Anderton, director and video artists Adam R. Levine and Peter Bo Rappmund join urban historian and author Eric R. Avila to discuss their unique perspectives and insights on the L.A. freeway as it relates to the city.
