New York University James L. Dolan Recording & Teaching Complex

New York, New York

Gensler collaborated with NYU’s Steinhardt School Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions faculty and acoustical specialists, Walters-Storyk, to design this 7,500-square-foot recording studio and teaching complex. Occupying an entire floor of an early 20th-century building, the facility comprises a cutting-edge 25-seat control room, a live room to accommodate large musical ensembles and several research labs, including a lab for 3D audio experimentation. Thoughtful use of space, sound isolation and flexibility was required to accommodate the dense program and provide students sufficient workspace, while generous use of glass provides visual access to instructors and introduces transparency into the recording process and experience.
