PARKSPACE

Austin, Texas

PARKSPACE is a community project led by the Austin Foundation for Architecture and AIA Austin in collaboration with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department and supported by Gensler. Located across four city parks, art installations are designed to help residents maintain social distance while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. Large, colorful boxes, placed six feet apart, are painted onto the grass using eco-friendly, water-based turf paint. The array of colors featured in each park is inspired by Texas wildflowers and a quote from Lady Bird Johnson, “Where flowers bloom, so does hope,” — a much-needed and timely inspiration. The park installation concept aims to make outdoor areas safer while offering a communal experience and visually appealing display for Austin residents to enjoy.
