Pillsbury Creative Commons
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Pillsbury Creative Commons (PCC) is the newly expanded campus of Pillsbury House + Theatre, continuing more than 30 years of community-based arts and economic development in South Minneapolis. Designed in collaboration with Gensler, the expansion embodies transparency, connection, and radical inclusivity, creating a flexible platform for a wide range of community-driven programs.
The heart of the project is a new two-story building that supports creative exchange, technical training, and local storytelling. It houses KRSM 98.9 FM’s radio studios, designed for high-quality acoustics and street-level visibility. Soundproof windows allow passersby to view live broadcasts, reinforcing the station’s role as a community voice. Inspired by radio waves, record grooves, and label designs, the architecture features subtle graphic lines, textured finishes, and bold pops of color that reflect KRSM’s brand identity.
Flexible gathering spaces adjacent to the studios support performances, after-school programs, and other creative activity, while two second floor live-work units host multidisciplinary artists-in-residence. A green roof enhances sustainability and sound control, and an upper-level deck offers a peaceful retreat. Additionally, a former auto garage next door now serves as a Scene Shop for PCC’s hands-on Technical Arts Training program.
