University of California, Davis Segundo Infill Housing
Davis, California
The new Segundo Infill Housing is envisioned as a place to foster well-being and a sense of belonging. It is the first new building in the planned transformation of the Segundo neighborhood at the University of California, Davis, and will accommodate up to 600 first-year students in double or triple occupancy rooms.
Social spaces clustered around a sunny south-facing plaza create a vibrant and welcoming arrival experience, where students can “see and be seen” as they come and go. Generous glazing will enhance visibility into communal areas, encouraging students to linger in places like a lounge with a shared open kitchen, study areas, “zoom rooms,” and a variety of quiet nooks indoors and outdoors. Laundry, an activity of daily life, is placed prominently in this mix of social spaces to promote engagement.
Residential floors are elevated above a podium, with ample space for landscape connections and bicycle parking under the building. Community is supported at a variety of scales, from the bedroom to articulated eight-room pods with inclusive all gender restrooms, to the floor communities in each wing, with diverse amenity spaces and window nooks for individuals and groups.
Reinforcing UC Davis as a leader in sustainable practices, and realized in partnership with McCarthy, the all-electric, LEED Gold building will strengthen the composition of this campus neighborhood and set the tone for Segundo’s future student housing.
