Commercial Office Building Electrification Playbook

What We Did

The transition to a decarbonized built environment requires a fundamental shift in building design and construction practices. Electrification of commercial buildings presents a significant opportunity to reduce carbon emissions, but that work isn’t simple. Challenges — including technical, regulatory, and economic factors — often fragment decision-making processes, leading to complications. This research directly addresses this critical need by developing a comprehensive toolkit to guide architects and engineers through the electrification of commercial office buildings in New England. The study emphasizes a data-driven approach, combining a structured decision-making framework with empirical data gathered from diverse case studies. The resulting toolkit promises to streamline the electrification process, improve project outcomes, and ultimately accelerate the transition to a more sustainable built environment. The findings have broader implications for building decarbonization strategies nationwide.
