Education Engagement Index 2022

What We Did

We deployed an online survey to an anonymous panel of 2,143 students, educators, and staff members at U.S.-based colleges and universities (72% public, 28% private). Responses were collected from April 28 to May 24, 2022. Student respondents (65% undergraduate, 14% graduate, 21% community college) were required to be enrolled in a full-time program. Educator respondents were required to be teaching in either a full-time or part-time capacity. Our survey represents the education experiences and expectations of community members from over 530 unique, U.S.-based institutions. Respondents were diverse across demographic and geographic characteristics, such as age (18+), gender identity, race/ethnicity, and U.S. region.

While the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic may be with us for a long time, students and educators demonstrate incredible resilience. In 2021, this survey revealed negative impacts on learning effectiveness, quality of relationships, motivation, and emotional well-being. Just one year later, this 2022 survey indicates those trends have reversed. All groups now report improvements in these indicators, similar to pre-COVID levels. The reported effectiveness in all areas support the need for continued choice and a hybrid learning future for higher education.
