Research Project Name
Neurodiversity in the Workplace
What We Did
Inclusive Design has typically focused on the physical and social aspects of inhabiting space, but we can’t design for the whole person without also considering how the brain perceives and processes our environments. Inclusive, evidence-based research into neurodiversity and neurodivergent experiences is helping us expand our approach and has allowed us to see Inclusive Design from its most holistic perspective yet. As Inclusive Design broadens to address a wider range of differences, including brain diversity, the focus is shifting from the experience of bodies in space to a more nuanced view that encompasses both body and mind.
Roughly 20% of the global population is neurodivergent and navigates underlying brain processes that are categorically distinct from the majority in both experience and behavior. Individuals who are neurodivergent process sensations, emotions, and information differently. This research explores workplace experiences that are unique to neurodivergent individuals, the factors that contribute to positive and negative sensory experiences in the workplace, and how a deeper understanding of the neurodivergent experience can drive more inclusive workplace design.
