Carnegie Music Hall Seat Replacement
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh is an iconic and revered space, finished in 1895 as part of Andrew Carnegie’s vision to create a home for musical culture. This renovation provided necessary updates throughout the hall, including expanded and replaced railings and seating to meet ADA requirements, plaster repair and mural preservation, refinished interiors that better reflect the Music Hall’s original design intent, and upgrades to the electrical, audio, and mechanical systems. The project demanded creative solutions to existing structural challenges, accounting for the historic clay speed tile arch structure. This renovation allows for more accessible and functional space for decades to come.
The team advocated for high-quality finishes, particularly custom brass stair nosing that allows historic stair geometries to be maintained while achieving code compliance. The team paid careful attention to the guardrail and handrail base plates and escutcheon detailing with regard to the limitations of the brass material and consistency with the historic aesthetic of the hall.
