Covenant House Texas, The Jamey Rootes Campus

Houston, Texas

CHALLENGE
Youth homelessness in Greater Houston has surged, creating an urgent need for safe housing and comprehensive support. Since 1983, Covenant House Texas (CHT) has served as a sanctuary for homeless youth; however, rising demand has outpaced its capacity. Aging facilities in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood lacked security and space for growth, prompting the need for a transformative solution to modernize operations and strengthen services for vulnerable youth.

SOLUTION
Gensler partnered with CHT to develop a master plan replacing three outdated buildings with a unified, four-story residential-style facility. The new design consolidates operations, improves safety, and fosters collaboration by bringing staff and youth under one roof. Welcoming communal areas, specialized program spaces, and temporary housing support a holistic approach. Trauma-informed features, such as single-occupant restrooms and open layouts, promote healing and well-being.

IMPACT
CHT’s redesigned campus enhances care for homeless youth by creating a safe, community-focused environment. Thoughtfully planned spaces promote dignity, privacy, and emotional well-being. Additionally, improved operations and expanded amenities help staff manage donations, intake, and programs more effectively. This secure, nurturing setting empowers youth to transition to independent adulthood, reinforcing CHT’s mission and amplifying its impact across Greater Houston.
