In an effort to propel Newark’s revitalization, Onyx Equities partnered with Gensler to reimagine Gateway, a tired office complex built in the 1970s. Originally, Gateway separated visitors from city streets via bridges and tunnels, but is now designed to connect, activate, and create a destination that reflects back on the heart of Newark for residents and commuters. The 1.6 million-sq.-ft. tiered office complex consists of buildings One, Two, and Four with curated retail spaces along the concourse. Each building is connected through a series of circuitous pathways, including skybridges from Newark Penn Station. As an urban connector bringing life back to the streets surrounding Newark Penn Station, Gateway will become a welcoming hub, anchored by the community vernacular as the area evolves and adapts over time.
