This new building at the heart of the Santa Monica College campus serves as a focal point for the physical activities of the student population. The facility includes a new fitness center, weight room, dance studios, locker rooms, group exercise space, and classrooms, along with athletic department offices and a new campus central plant. An existing gymnasium in the adjacent building has been renovated and connected to extend the programmatic functionality of this campus facility. The project achieved LEED® Platinum certification, and key features include the incorporation of natural ventilation, solar-heated hot water, and maximizing spatial daylight autonomy. This activated space serves to enhance environmental health, as well as personal wellbeing, for students and visitors alike.
