Terry Black’s Barbecue & Opal’s Oyster House
Waco, Texas
With sights set on crafting customer experiences in new markets, the Black family partnered with Gensler to convert an old plumbing warehouse into a one-of-a-kind barbeque experience. Reclaimed wood, rustic patinas, and exposed structure exude the warehouse aesthetic. The addition of steel windows transforms the masonry exterior, allowing natural light to flood the dining space. Behind the restaurant, a new pit house features six wood-burning smokers and frames a courtyard-style space with seating, games, and music, like a mini beer garden. While bar-b-que is the focus, the Black family expanded the exterior spaces surrounding the large oak tree to become home to Opal’s Oyster Bar. This is the owner’s first high-end venue for customers seeking fresh oysters and seafood paired with fine wine and signature cocktails.
