As neighborhood bars evolve into experiential destinations, they must balance novelty with familiarity, staying rooted in the communities they serve. In Chicago’s West Town, Bar Bambi needed to redefine the neighborhood bar as both familiar and experimental. The design had to reflect Katie Renshaw’s avant-garde identity without literal storytelling, working within an existing industrial shell. It also had to shift fluidly from relaxed evening ambiance to late-night energy, supporting diverse social interactions within a cohesive, welcoming environment.
Gensler created an immersive interior driven by light, materiality, and abstraction. A sculptural, color-shifting bar anchors the space, evolving throughout the day and glowing outward at night. Reflective surfaces and a violet ceiling add depth and drama, while orb-like lighting subtly nods to “Bambi.” Warm textures soften exposed industrial elements, and flexible lounge-style seating supports a range of social experiences — from intimate moments to high-energy nightlife.
Bar Bambi has become a vibrant social anchor that mirrors West Town’s creative energy. Its shifting atmosphere encourages exploration and repeat visits, allowing guests to shape their own experiences. By prioritizing mood, adaptability, and personal expression, the design transforms a traditional bar into an emotionally engaging environment that fosters connection, curiosity, and a strong sense of place.
