The Fields Studios

Chicago, Illinois

The Fields Studios, Chicago’s first dedicated studio campus, transforms the former Marshall Field’s warehouse site into a hub for production. Nine state-of-the-art sound stages and studio support spaces are integrated seamlessly into the dense urban context, while a flexible “base camp” accommodates sets, trucks, and production teams, creating a campus that balances scale, efficiency, and adaptability.

Production offices, workshops, and stages were added to the existing Fields complex, which also includes 123 loft apartments and a grocery store, forming a vibrant, mixed-use environment. Thoughtful design strategies enhance both function and experience, most notably a light-filled, double-height lobby that welcomes visitors, supports operational flow, and fosters a sense of community among users.

Collaboration was central throughout the process. Gensler worked closely with the client, operators, general contractor, subcontractors, and consultants to deliver exceptional acoustic performance and layouts tailored to the unique demands of media production. As a new creative asset for the city and region, The Fields Studios solidifies Chicago’s position as a hub for film and television.
