Healthcare workers are struggling, and the impacts range from higher rates of errors and patient infections to lower patient satisfaction, workforce shortages, and weaker hospital reputations, to mention just a few. Although elements of the job will always pose serious physical and emotional challenges, we believe healthcare facilities — especially hospitals — can be designed to better support workers. Our inaugural Healthcare Workplace Survey surveyed 1,204 front-line healthcare providers (physicians, nurses, medical assistants, and technicians) in the fall of 2025 using a third-party panel provider. Respondents lived in the U.S. and Canada, were employed full-time, and spent at least some of their time caring for patients in a hospital setting. Beyond the goal of helping providers thrive in the workplace, the findings identified operational and design decisions that might reduce attrition and increase staff satisfaction, with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes and making hospitals more effective.
