How to Design Sustainable Digital Media Experiences
What We Did
Digital media sits at the intersection of two of the most important design trends: experience and sustainability. Spaces of all types, from conference rooms to retail stores to urban residential developments, are increasingly positioning themselves as drivers of experience. People today expect more than utility from their spaces, instead seeking environments that will provide inspiration and delight where they live, work, and play. Digital media that bridges the physical and digital worlds in unexpected and playful ways can supply these enriching experiences.
The challenge facing the architecture and design industry is that sustainability has become an imperative, but it is often perceived as being at odds with digital media. We began our research to assess the veracity of this perception. What we found is that digital experience design (DXD) can support, and even further, sustainable design. By committing to sustainability early and by understanding which actions will yield tangible results at every phase of the design process, it is possible to design digital media experiences that use less energy, reduce e-waste, and elevate the use of eco-friendly materials.
