Research Project Name
Revitalizing Vacant Strip Malls for Community Growth
What We Did
Across the United States, 10% of strip malls sit vacant. Over the past decade, traditional strip malls have struggled to keep pace with shifting consumer expectations, leading to increased closures and underutilization. While many redevelopment efforts focus solely on attracting new retail tenants, a more holistic approach is needed to create long-term value.
We believe that any strip mall can be strategically repositioned using a human-centric, data-driven, and integrated approach. By aligning redevelopment strategies with evolving consumer behaviors and local community needs, these spaces can be transformed into vibrant centers that generate social, economic, and environmental benefits. Our process, toolkit, and methodology are intentionally designed to be adaptable across diverse strip mall contexts. This enables us to deliver context-specific solutions while establishing a replicable, scalable framework for economically, socially, and culturally driven revitalization.
Our research explores whether adaptive reuse strategies, stakeholder engagement, and data-informed planning can lead to more successful redevelopment outcomes. These findings offer key insights for municipalities, developers, and investors seeking to convert vacant strip malls into dynamic, community-oriented spaces that promote long-term economic and social resilience.
