The Oldest Workforce in History

What We Did

For decades, conversations about the future of work have focused on youth, with each new generation entering the labor force prompting questions about their expectations, work styles, and the adaptations employers must make. This focus on the “next big generation” has overshadowed a more significant shift happening at the opposite end of the age spectrum. Globally, declining birth rates and rising life expectancies are creating a demographic reality in which the world is aging faster than ever, and the workforce is aging alongside it. In the U.S., the fastest‑growing segment of the labor force is not young entrants but workers over 65, prompting a reconsideration of long-held assumptions about retirement, work, and workplace design. Combining global demographic research with findings from Gensler’s 2024 U.S. Workplace Survey, this paper shows that older workers are not only remaining in the workforce longer but thriving and redefining expectations. Organizations that embrace this shift will gain a decisive advantage in the future of work.
