Commerce Club

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Gensler is transforming a vacant 48,000-square-foot, five-story loft in Grand Rapids into a private club that blends historic character with modern amenities. Formerly a paint warehouse, the renovation introduces flexible, technology-enabled spaces for café, bar, coworking, meeting, event, residential, and fitness programming. Commerce Club will feature a year-round terrace with fully operable bifold doors that creates seamless indoor-outdoor experiences, adaptable to Grand Rapids’ climate. Warm lighting, consistent materials, and thoughtful spatial layering support collaboration, engagement, and belonging, enhancing the membership experience and strengthening community connections.

Historic elements integrate with contemporary finishes, creating a dialogue between past and present. Flexible furniture, partitioning, and circulation strategies unify diverse program areas while accommodating evolving needs. The project supports the client’s long-term growth, providing a cohesive, adaptable environment for social, professional, and fitness activities, all within a space that celebrates Grand Rapids’ heritage and its next generation of leaders.
