Gran Hotel Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica

The Gran Hotel Costa Rica’s addition is a delicate and thoughtful response to the challenge of integrating a modern addition with a historic structure. The new addition, designed by Gensler, acknowledges the rich history of the building and seeks to preserve its original character while accommodating the needs of contemporary visitors.

The minimalist design, constructed with steel and glass, complements the existing hotel building and restores the original volume that had been lost over time. The arches, which are integral to the character of the building, are recreated with a fritted glass that not only pays homage to the original design but also provides protection from direct sunlight. At night, the arches become opaque, revealing the arcade once again.

The addition’s light-colored facade is carefully chosen to harmonize with the urban context of San José Centro and engage in a respectful dialogue with the ornate facade of the National Theater of Costa Rica. The project is a testament to the care and attention to detail required to sensitively integrate a modern addition with a historic structure, acknowledging the history of the building while embracing the demands of the present.
