OhioHealth Neuroscience Wellness Center

Columbus, Ohio

The Neuroscience Wellness Center at OhioHealth is a one-of-a-kind destination, designed to empower its community of users to take charge of their recovery process. This interdisciplinary community center expands beyond institutional treatment, offering patients access to comprehensive care with a holistic focus on the mind, body, and spirit. Perched atop a ridge at the edge of a forest preserve, the center is organized around a communal “hearth” with inspiring 360-degree views of nature that can be accessed by all patients, including those with low mobility.

The 28,000 square-foot building features a scenic interior walking track that wraps a courtyard, as well as wellness studios, flexible classrooms, a geriatric clinic, a cafe, teaching kitchen, and administration workspace. Frictionless design considerations for those with neurological disorders are integrated throughout the campus, including intuitive wayfinding, abundant yet controlled daylighting, transition spaces between the interior and exterior, and subtle material changes within spaces.

In 2023, the American Institute of Architects honored OhioHealth Neuroscience Wellness Center as a Winner of its prestigious 2023 Healthcare Design Awards, which recognize “cutting-edge designs that help solve aesthetic, civic, urban, and social problems while also being functional and sustainable.” One juror noted that the project “clearly addresses the needs of the clientele it’s serving. It also captures the idea of beauty so well,” prioritizing the surrounding landscape and access to abundant daylight.
