Challenge

SAMH aimed to establish its first integrated mental wellness centre within a public housing block. The former childcare facility was structurally dense and segmented, limiting flexibility and clarity. The space needed to accommodate multiple programmes and user groups while ensuring dignity, confidentiality, and ease of navigation. At the same time, it had to feel familiar and welcoming to the heartland community, addressing stigma often associated with mental health environments.

Solution

The design transforms the existing space into a community‑oriented “Wellness Deck” inspired by Singapore’s void decks. Clear zoning organises public, semi‑public, and restricted areas, enabling intuitive wayfinding and psychological safety. Flexible layouts support varied programmes, while semi‑enclosed waiting spaces offer calm, comfort, and passive oversight. Warm materials and familiar spatial cues create an approachable environment that integrates care, connection, and community life.

Impact

Space2Connect redefines how mental wellness services are experienced in the community. By creating a welcoming, familiar environment inspired by Singapore’s recognizable void decks, the centre reduces stigma, encourages help-seeking, and supports recovery through connection. The project strengthens SAMH’s ability to deliver integrated services, host community programs, and foster meaningful partnerships—extending mental wellness beyond clinical care into everyday life.

[Gensler’s design team] transformed what we envisioned for SAMH Space2Connect into a purposeful and beautiful space to promote mental wellness for all.
