CHALLENGE
For many patients, traditional outpatient or specialty healthcare facilities are often sterile, unwelcoming environments with harsh lighting, bland color schemes, and rigid layouts that prioritize clinical efficiency over emotional comfort. Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) sought to redefine the traditional eye care clinic experience by elevating patient and staff experiences while integrating new design guidelines, creating a welcoming space that eases the anxiety often associated with medical visits.

SOLUTION
In collaboration with Gensler, RCTX implemented a new design concept inspired by a journey through a national forest. The clinic features a unique “on-stage–off-stage” layout that enhances staff efficiency through dual-sided exam rooms and strategically placed workstations. Patients move through immersive zones, each designed with biophilic elements, sensory cues, and hospitality-inspired finishes to promote comfort and accessibility. Sounds of nature, warm lighting, and tactile materials create a multisensory experience, while thoughtful design details like contrast-enhancing colors and low-level lighting support patients with visual impairments.

IMPACT
The Woodlands location of RCTX sets a new benchmark for specialty healthcare environments, transforming the patient journey into a healing experience and improving staff workflows. The innovative design has elevated the standard of care in the Greater Houston area and serves as a model for future clinic buildouts across Texas. By integrating research, inclusivity, and hospitality into a cohesive space, RCTX enhances its reputation as one of the nation’s leading retina-only ophthalmology practices.
