As part of eBay's initiative to enhance their amenities, Gensler was asked to transform their cafeteria into a full-service amenities building with an inviting dining experience, training rooms, and employee services. eBay’s refocus on culture and brand informed Gensler’s design of “The Kitchen” that offers a connected food experience at their San Jose campus, inspired by food truck culture. Metal screens at each food station mimic raised food truck windows inviting employees to interact with chefs. Picnic tables, an ice cream cart, concrete blocks, and string lights create an ambiance of the outside indoors. A self-checkout system eliminates queueing to encourage employee interaction. Unique branding and wayfinding elements were created to align with the vibe of the local food movement and the communal feel.
