Access to efficient judicial services is essential for ensuring equity in a society. When citizens can quickly and effectively access government facilities, it promotes transparency, strengthens trust in the legal system, and promotes a sense of security. To meet this goal for the Poder Judicial in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, we had to unify services that were once in 11 different structures into a single building.
We designed the building to house 368 judicial staff in 34 offices while also acting as a welcoming symbol of modernization and accessibility for the Puntarenas community. Ramps, elevators, multilingual signage, and inclusive services invites all types of people. Natural light, green spaces, and sustainable materials promotes well-being and helps manage climate risk from natural disasters.
The new structure has become a symbol of inclusivity and resilience for the local government that demonstrates a commitment to accessibility, safety, and security. It is a multifunctional community center that has created jobs and boosted the local economy. Most importantly, this new design allows people to take care of business in an efficient way while strengthening the relationship between the judicial system and the public.
