Challenge

Community colleges serve some of the most diverse student populations in higher education, yet many campuses lack spaces that reflect and support that complexity. At Southwestern College, just southeast of San Diego, the campus lacked a singular destination where students could gather, connect, and access the resources essential to their success. The college needed a centralized hub that would unify academic life, foster belonging, and embed wellness into the everyday student experience.

Solution

The new Student Union completes the campus core, linking interior spaces to outdoor courtyards and academic facilities through open, accessible pathways. A diverse program mix supports the full spectrum of student life. Flexible spaces support planned activities and spontaneous exchange, while wellness spaces provide places to stay active, rest, and reflect. Immersive Culinary Arts environments invite hands-on collaboration, and dining cultivates community. Natural daylighting, passive ventilation, and green roofs reduce mechanical loads and keep the building comfortable and connected to the outdoors.

Impact

The Student Union gives Southwestern College a true heart of campus. By bringing together dining, academic support, wellness, and community spaces under one roof, the project transforms the daily student experience into one defined by openness and belonging. The building strengthens connections between students and faculty, making it easier for students to engage in campus life and advance toward their educational goals. Passive systems, such as green roofs and on-site solar generation, enhance comfort and performance.
