Baltimore Penn Station — reimagined by Gensler alongside Amtrak — is a truly transformative project that puts the firm’s full toolkit on display and helps the entire city rethink its future. Consisting of a refresh to the historic head house, a station expansion, a commercial office development, and the addition of connective public plazas, Baltimore Penn Station puts an exclamation point on the idea of inclusive and forward-facing design. Featuring the experiential concept of “train as theater,” the transit development design puts the old station as well as the mobility activity itself on display. A vast range of convenient transportation options, including buses, trains, scooters, bicycles, rideshares, and taxis, is seamlessly woven into the program. A robust signage and wayfinding package supports this wide array of transportation outlets, while also establishing a welcoming tone. By gracefully meshing with the city it serves, the reinvigorated Baltimore Penn Station strengthens a tapestry that tells the story of a bright future for the city.
