Today’s libraries are transforming from quiet spaces for books into essential community resources. Toyohashi City sought to create a new urban hub within its redeveloped station-front building, centered around a public library. To revitalize the city center and foster intergenerational connections, the city envisioned a “living room in the heart of the city” — a welcoming space where people of all ages can naturally gather, interact, and create together.

The library offers five distinct zones, including quiet areas for reading, active spaces for all ages, and learning zones for gaining new knowledge. At its center, an open staircase connects two floors, serving as a lively hub for events, such as talks and film screenings. A centrally located open café encourages community interaction and expresses the unique charm of a city-center library.

Since opening in 2021, the library has become a beloved part of the community, attracting not only traditional users but also younger generations and families. Its innovative interior design—recognized for contributing to urban revitalization and encouraging cross‑generational interaction—has earned design awards from internationally respected organizations and publications, including IIDA, the AIA, and Interior Design magazine.

豊橋市では、駅前の再開発ビル内に新たな公共図書館を設け、都市の拠点となる空間を構想した。中心市街地の活性化と世代を超えた交流を促すため、図書館を単なる読書の場にとどめず、誰もが自然に集い、交流し、創造できる「まちなかのリビングルーム」として位置づけている。

館内には、本の世界に浸れる落ち着いたゾーンをはじめ、子どもから大人まで幅広い世代の興味を引くアクティブゾーン、新たな知識や技術の習得を支援する学びのゾーンなど、利用者の多様なニーズに応える5つの異なるデザインのゾーンを設けた。その中心には、2階と3階をつなぐ開放的な大階段を配置。トークイベントや上映会など、多目的に活用され、自然と人が集まる賑わいの場となっている。さらに、中央にはオープンなカフェを設け、誰もが気軽に立ち寄れる居心地の良い空間を創出。まちとのつながりを促し、まちなか図書館ならではの魅力を生み出している。

2021年の開館以来、地域住民に親しまれており、従来の図書館利用者に加えて、若者や子育て世代など新たな層の来館も増加している。街の活性化や世代を超えた交流を促す革新的なインテリアデザインが地域貢献の一環として高く評価され、国際インテリアデザイン協会やアメリカ建築家協会、米国のインテリア専門誌『Interior Design』など、国際的に権威ある団体や媒体が主催するデザイン賞を受賞した。
