Challenge

The construction industry faces mounting pressure to reconcile traditional building practices with urgent climate demands and evolving workplace expectations. As firms navigate this transition, their headquarters must authentically reflect both heritage and transformation. As an employee-owned construction firm driven by shared success, Hensel Phelps sought a global headquarters that would demonstrate their leadership and innovation in the construction industry while honoring nearly a century of craftsmanship. Its new home in Loveland, Colorado, needed to incorporate progressive building technologies and materials without compromising approachability or regional context.

Solution

The new headquarters embraces a holistic approach to sustainability, leveraging mass timber to reduce embodied carbon and sourcing materials from responsibly managed forests. Targeting LEED Gold and WELL Platinum certifications, the design prioritizes both environmental performance and employee well-being. A three-story central atrium organizes the building, promoting collaboration and connection while celebrating the craft of construction through its exposed structure and materiality. From large-scale structural gestures to intimate interior details, every element reflects the precision and artistry of construction.

Impact

The headquarters stands as a living testament to the company’s values, where tradition and transformation reinforce one another. The building elevates employee experience, enhances collaboration, and strengthens cultural identity through spaces that foster interaction and pride. Sustainable strategies set a new benchmark for responsible development, demonstrating how advanced building methods and environmental stewardship can seamlessly coexist. More than a workplace, the campus is a symbol of Hensel Phelps’ enduring industry leadership.
