As the legal sector moves away from hierarchical layouts and closed corner offices toward more open, equitable, and hospitality-influenced environments, firms operating in competitive talent markets like Singapore face a sharper question: how do you express global prestige without losing local identity? Freshfields, a global firm with nearly four decades in Singapore, sought to strike a rare balance: refined yet welcoming, and deeply rooted in place while supporting a progressive, inclusive workplace for a modern legal practice.

Gensler responded with “An Ode to Our Legacy” — a design concept fusing British heritage with Singaporean influence. Inspired by Black & White bungalows, shophouses, and ‘Kaki Lima’ walkways, the space layers monochrome palettes, architectural rhythm, and crafted heritage details. A dramatic sculptural archway connects key spaces, and curated local art reinforces a sense of place. Inclusive design principles — Braille signage, accessible counters, adjustable desks, and a dedicated nursing room — are woven throughout.

The result is a poised, immersive environment that elevates the everyday work experience. Spaces are intuitive, inclusive, and quietly elegant, eschewing hierarchy in favour of openness and connection. Sustainable strategies underpin the design, from material selection to daylight optimisation, aligning the workplace with both environmental responsibility and enduring relevance.
