Challenge

Long known for its car-centric culture, Los Angeles is increasingly expanding its Metro rail network with several new lines that promise to create and connect communities across the city. Transit-oriented developments (TODs) have the power to expedite this new community development, standing as bustling beacons of transit’s ability to improve both commute and climate.

Solution

Adjacent to Metro’s fast-expanding Expo Line, West Edge transforms a busy intersection into a connected neighborhood hub. Terraced massing forms wrap a street level paseo that unites luxury apartments, creative office space, and retail amenities, including a specialty grocer, boutique shops, studio fitness facilities, and an array of restaurants. West Edge prioritizes mobility by strategically including cycling, bus, metro rail, pedestrian, and vehicular access — giving residents a multitude of options for their daily commutes and reducing reliance on individual vehicles.

Impact

West Edge sets a precedent for upcoming ventures along the Expo line and across LA Metro’s expanding network by embracing a forward-thinking approach to urban density. Input from over 150 stakeholder meetings ensured that everyone in the community had a voice in the project’s outcome. Ongoing events like farmers’ markets, pop-up craft fairs, and other programming all take place in its vibrant open-air plaza, prompting new connections and community among residents and visitors.
