Challenge

As air travel rebounds and passenger expectations evolve, airports face unprecedented pressure to modernize while maintaining operations. Many legacy terminals are constrained by outdated layouts, limited capacity, and urban site restrictions, making upgrades complex and high stakes. Projects like LaGuardia’s Terminal C respond to these challenges by consolidating multiple terminals, improving passenger flow, integrating advanced technology, and meeting sustainability goals — all while operating in the nation’s busiest airport system.

Solution

The design incorporates high-end finishes, including natural wood tones and warm accent colors, for a hospitality-like feel that invokes calm. The terminal elevates the passenger experience, offering a number of local, strategically-placed concessions and upgraded bathrooms. Rebuilding a fully operational airport within one of the world’s densest urban environments required strategic collaboration with project partners and a complex phasing plan — allowing the team to open the terminal 18 months ahead of schedule.

Impact

Delta’s Terminal C reimagines the airport as a destination in itself, where hospitality meets seamless function. Sunlight floods through floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic runway views and mezzanines visually connect commercial areas to the boarding gates below, transforming moments in transit into experiences worth savoring for the thousands of passengers who traverse it each day. Once regarded as the worst airport in America, LGA is now cited as one of the best by sources including Forbes Travel.
