Challenge

Across the U.S., regional airports are experiencing surging passenger volumes, aging infrastructure, and mounting pressure to modernize facilities amid significant funding constraints. Rising demand is straining terminals, baggage systems, and gate capacity nationwide as airports race to meet operational and sustainability expectations. Against this backdrop, Yampa Valley Regional Airport faced the same urgency — needing to expand capacity while preserving its Western identity and honoring the valley’s cultural and natural heritage.

Solution

The four-gate expansion will deliver spaces designed to accommodate the evolving fleet mix now serving Yampa Valley Regional Airport, while connecting locals and visitors to Routt County. The 60,000 square foot addition is inspired by the agrarian typologies found along the Yampa River, grounding the passenger experience in a strong sense of place. New geothermal systems boost efficiency, while additional gates, boarding bridges, and upgraded baggage operations modernize both the travel experience and airport operations.

Impact

The expansion transforms Yampa Valley into a destination in its own right — creating an inviting civic space that celebrates its identity. Gate lounges, expansive landscape views, and a new airside restaurant provide a welcome respite from the stressors of travel. And with mass timber and 100% electrification of major building systems, the project sets a new benchmark for sustainable regional airport design.
