Umbra is a leading manufacturer in the housewares industry that sells through over 25,000 retailers in 120 countries. The company wants to grow its business by expanding into other market sectors, so it turned to Gensler to design two bath accessory collections — Junip and Scillae — that can be sold to hospitality accounts, as well as to consumers. The design team’s objective was to improve user experience, thinking beyond basic function and decorative treatment. Its strategy was to deliver unexpected benefits and to solve common problems encountered by hotel guests and bathroom users, in general. One example is a coordinated mobile phone holder that allows technology-dependent occupants to position their mobile devices for easy viewing while keeping them off of wet and germ-ridden vanities.
