As the WNBA enters a new era of growth marked by record viewership, rising sponsorships, and a landmark media rights deal, teams are investing in facilities specifically designed to attract and retain elite female athletes. Several WNBA teams are capitalizing on this momentum by creating new dedicated training facilities, including the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks envisioned a state-of-the-art training facility that would raise the bar for athletic performance and holistic wellness, while reflecting the vibrancy and culture of Los Angeles.
Gensler’s design for the Sparks’ 55,000-square-foot training facility integrates the city’s natural beauty with athlete-centered innovation. Sweeping architectural curves, full-height windows, and retractable doors integrate indoors with outdoors, filling the spaces with natural light. A circular locker room fosters team unity, while two full courts and six hoops provide elite training conditions. The WNBA’s first-ever indoor-outdoor player sanctuary provides wellness-focused amenities, including an outdoor spa pool, dedicated nap rooms, and flexible spaces for yoga, meditation, and team building.
The $150 million facility — the largest single-team investment in women’s sports history — sets a new benchmark for athlete-centered design. Located in a thriving sports hub alongside teams like the Lakers and Chargers, it reinforces the Sparks’ identity as a pillar of L.A.’s sports landscape. For the players, it provides an environment that fuels performance and recovery, on and off the court. For the WNBA, it represents a visionary step forward in creating the next generation of spaces where women’s sports thrive.
