How does the design of science and laboratory buildings drive innovation, creativity, and collaboration in scientific research?
Research Project Name
Designing Effective Research Buildings
What We Did
We studied different approaches to the design of laboratory and scientific buildings to identify how architecture supports collaboration and innovation in the sciences. We conducted interviews with leading scientific program directors in academic, industry, government, and privately funded research institutes. We surveyed users of both wet and dry labs, identifying both successful and unsuccessful models of research communities. We also analyzed how lab users spend their time within a framework specific to scientific research. Finally, we created architectural diagrams and illustrations to discover the pattern language of successful research institutes.
