Challenge

Healthcare is transforming from providing care primarily within large, centralized hospitals toward distributed care systems that prioritize patient experience, accessibility, and efficiency. As healthcare providers adapt to this shift and expand patient access, adaptive reuse of existing buildings will be a crucial strategy — offering a sustainable, timely, and cost-effective way to align older structures with modern healthcare needs while better addressing both patient outcomes and financial considerations.

Solution

Summit Health and CityMD partnered with Gensler to design a multispeciality hub with a modern, patient-centric experience, optimized for convenience in a cutting-edge facility that combines primary and specialty care. Designed in a repurposed office building, spanning three floors and 78,000 square feet, the hub is organized around a central courtyard that provides natural light, as well as respite and a calming view, elevating the patient experience throughout the building.

Impact

The multispecialty hub significantly enhances patient experience and operational efficiency. By thoughtfully consolidating over 35 primary and specialty providers — including comprehensive cancer care and advanced imaging services — the design fosters seamless collaboration among specialists. Spacious waiting areas and 118 efficiently planned exam rooms improve comfort and care provider workflow, positioning Summit Health as a leading facility offering convenient, high-quality healthcare in a welcoming environment.
