Replacing two tired Santa Monica hotels, the new Shore Hotel merges the ocean landscape with urban fabric through contemporary design. The 90,000-square-foot project encompasses 164 guest rooms in two buildings connected by a bridge. A stainless steel trellis unifies the geometry of the main building and creates an outdoor room. Clad in stainless steel on its west elevation and featuring floor-to-ceiling glass and glass balcony railings, the hotel’s minimalist design is accented by wooden louvers. Preserving ocean views was essential to design, and balconies not directly facing the ocean used canted walls to improve views yet maintain privacy for guests in this environmentally friendly travel destination.
