Crain Communications Inc., Chicago

Chicago, Illinois

Journalists often use story elements such as headlines and bylines to draw readers in. In the same vein, Gensler incorporated graphic elements into the design of Crain Communications’ Chicago office to make its newsroom more tangible and to draw visitors in with the company’s compelling story. From the reception area’s attention-grabbing logo overlaying headlines from Crain publications to a visual timeline that runs along a central interconnecting staircase featuring photos, publication covers and text, key moments in Crain’s nearly 100-year history are highlighted. Open, interactive work areas support a hive of activity and promote cross-collaboration across four floors, while a cafeteria with sweeping views encourages editors and publishers to gather for afternoon breaks, impromptu meetings and community events.
