EMI Music Japan

Tokyo, Japan

This office consolidation stemmed from a change in ownership, in which Japanese Toshiba EMI became a subsidiary of London-based EMI Music. A thorough makeover and rebranding was needed, to forge a single identity while respecting the needs of the five individual business units. The design concept is based on the Japanese traditional game of kumiki—intricate hand-made wood puzzles characterized by detailed joinery. This concept in mind, each unit was given a defining element: wood, water, metal, fire or stone; carefully handmade and artistic objects provide focal points at the entrance to each unit’s workspace, while the consistent workspace design applied elsewhere kept costs down.
