Renmin University of China, East Campus

Beijing, China

This project was conceived as part of a planning competition for what would be 300 acres of deeply sustainable development and educational innovation—a learning environment at once rigorous and rich with opportunities for contemplation and meditation for its 30,000-person community. Strictly pedestrian-oriented—a 10-minute walk from end to end—Gensler’s proposed design raises the learning core of campus above the ground of its surroundings, celebrates connectivity and serendipitous interactions, engages the river/open space context through landscaping and water treatment and promotes the aspiration of the Living Building Challenge. The plan establishes a firm and adaptable attitude to sustainability, supporting Renmin’s resiliency for generations to come.
