Offering one of the few Automotive Technology degrees in the country, Southern Illinois University’s new Automotive/Aviation Transportation Education Center includes three facilities designed around the program’s instructional and research curriculum. Gensler led the programming and design phase of the project and guided the university through the LEED® certification process towards the goal of silver rating. High-bay automotive component and demonstration labs, service bays, and an engine and chassis test cell are housed in the main facility, an 187,000-square-foot, two-story building. A separate building houses aviation simulators and airport weather/dispatch functions, while the third building accommodates offices and classrooms. The three buildings are connected by a two-story, day-lit circulation spline, encouraging movement and collaboration between buildings.
