Boy Scouts of America, Camp Strake

Houston, TX, USA

As development projects enroached upon the original Camp Strake, a beloved 70-year-old camp facility, the Boy Scouts of America partnered with Gensler to envision a modern space on a new 2,800-acre parcel with prime access to nature. The camp's new home is surrounded by the Sam Houston National Forest, and provides the space to usher in new ideas about leadership, environmental stewardship, and outdoor adventure, without compromising the wilderness experience. As part of the planning and design process, Gensler enlisted the help of its summer internship program team. Twenty-one architecture and interior design students from schools across the country created design concepts that included zip lines, planetariums, adventure rides as well as cabins, a leadership center, and ceremonial sites.
